E-commerce live chat for online stores: who should answer, what chat must read, how to pick software and measure it, with six guides from setup to Crisp.

E-commerce live chat is a message window on your store where shoppers ask about products, orders and returns without leaving the page. A widget collects the message, an inbox routes it, and a person, a bot or an AI agent answers. For an online store, what matters is where the chat lands and whether the answerer can see and change the order.

What is e-commerce live chat?

E-commerce live chat is real-time messaging between a store and its shoppers, answered by people, a chatbot or an AI agent. It has three parts: the widget on the page, the inbox where conversations land, and the answerer. The widget is a commodity. The inbox and the answerer decide what the shopper actually gets.

The commodity point is easy to check. Wappalyzer tracks 376 live chat technologies in its 2026 ranking, and the most common one is a WhatsApp Business Chat button rather than a classic chat tool. If WhatsApp is your main channel, our WhatsApp chatbot comparison covers ten tools for online stores. Our website chat guide covers the five types of chat, the market figures and what to ask a vendor.

A chatbot and an AI agent are not the same answerer. A chatbot follows scripts; an AI agent reads data and acts within rules you set. The difference has its own page in our chatbot comparison, so this hub does not redefine it.

Which live chat guide answers your question?

Start from the question in front of you. The six guides in this cluster cover what store chat is and why stores offer it, how to add a chatbot, two specific setups (Crisp and PrestaShop) and how to measure the result. Each row below says what the guide answers and who it is for.

What jobs does live chat do on an e-commerce website?

Live chat does three jobs on an e-commerce website: it answers pre-sale questions about products, sizing and shipping; it answers order questions after purchase; and it takes requests to change something, such as a return, a cancellation or a new address. Each job asks something different of whoever answers.

JobTypical questionWhat the answerer needsWhere to read more
Pre-sale advice”Which size fits me?” or “Does this ship to Norway?”Product data, stock and your shipping policyChat benefits and product advice
Order status”Where is my order?”The order, the carrier and the tracking eventsOrder tracking
Changes”Can I change my address?” or “I want to return this”Permission to act in the shop and your return policyWebsite chatbots
Out of hoursAny of the above, at 23:00An answerer that is online, or an honest promise of when one will beChat benefits

The pattern matters more than any single row. A widget can collect all four questions, but only an answerer with the order in view can close the second, and only one allowed to act can close the third. Plan chat around the jobs, not around the window.

Who should answer your store’s chat: a person, a bot or an AI agent?

A person answers best when volume is low and questions are varied. A rule-based bot handles a short list of repeated questions and then hands over. An AI agent suits order questions at volume, because it can read the order, follow your policies and act. Most stores end up with a mix, so the hand-off matters as much as the answerer.

Whichever you choose, a person must be able to take over with the full transcript. Our website chatbots guide walks through hand-off rules and the most common reasons a store bot loops.

How do you choose live chat software for e-commerce?

Choose live chat software for e-commerce on where conversations land, what the answerer can see and do, and how a person takes over, before you look at the widget. A good-looking window that drops chats into a console nobody owns serves the shopper worse than a plain one inside your help desk.

Four questions settle most choices:

  • Where does the chat land? Once more than one person answers, it belongs in your help desk, beside email and social.
  • Can the answerer see the order? A where-is-my-order answer lives in the order, not in the chat.
  • Can it act? Refunds, cancellations and address changes should not need a second tool.
  • What happens offline? A shopper should know who answers, or when.

The website chat guide turns these into a nine-question vendor checklist. If you run a specific stack, the Crisp chat and PrestaShop chat guides apply the same questions to one tool and one platform.

How do you know your store’s live chat is working?

Your live chat is working when chats are answered fast, resolved on the first contact and handed over cleanly when the answerer cannot finish. Track response time, resolution and hand-offs side by side. A chat that closes without the customer’s problem solved is a failure, whatever the dashboard calls it.

That last point gets harder once a bot or an AI agent answers. Containment counts chats that never reached a person; resolution counts chats where the problem was solved. Our chat metrics guide gives the formulas, the benchmarks and a way to count resolved chats apart from hand-offs, so the number you report matches what the customer experienced.

Where does Engaige fit?

Engaige (that’s us) is not live chat software. It is the e-commerce-native AI support agent that plugs into the help desk you already run, actually resolves across your stack and keeps improving itself. Keep your helpdesk, replace the AI. Engaige AI learns from your conversations and inputs, configures your support agent and shows which policies it used. At MR MARVIS, a Shopify Plus brand, the agent resolves over 60% of the conversations it’s involved in.

Engaige's value proposition, 'Resolve up to 90% of your support tickets automatically', above the product's policy editor: asked in plain language to create a policy for damaged items, Engaige AI adds 'Damaged item, replacement in stock', which checks stock, creates a free reshipment and leaves a note for the warehouse, captured 12 October 2026 in the Engaige demo organisation.

Your chat widget and your help desk stay. Engaige works on the conversations already in your help desk or in Crisp. It reads the order, takes the action in the connected system first, then replies and closes. The rest goes to your team with context. It covers where-is-my-order questions, refunds and returns, cancellations and address changes, subscription changes and product advice.

You go live in Agent Assist in hours: Engaige drafts replies and suggested actions for your team. Engaige AI compares what your team said with what the agent suggested, learns from the difference, and improves itself, under your supervision: you approve the changes. Then you switch ticket types to autonomous one at a time; most brands are autonomous in about a week, and Engaige automates up to 90% of supported tickets. Autonomous from day one is also supported.

It keeps learning once autonomous, from emerging trends and from the tickets it hands back to a person. There are no decision trees and no prompt engineers, and Engaige AI lets you test every policy before launch.

You decide what the agent may do alone. Policies set how it reasons, what process it follows and when it may act, so a refund over a set amount can wait for a person while an address change before dispatch goes through. Every answer and action shows why, with the source.

The answers come from the store. On Shopify, Engaige combines live Admin API data, pricing across markets and SKUs, inventory, orders and customers, with the marketing content from your storefront, deeper than tools that only scrape. It also works with WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and custom platforms, and PrestaShop is a connected platform. It has 50+ native integrations; if a connector isn’t there, we build it on demand, live in about a week.

Before purchase, the same agent works as an AI shopping assistant in a storefront chat widget, usually the help centre widget, giving product advice from your catalogue. Engaige is text-first by design: email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social DMs, no voice AI. A live call gives an AI seconds to reason; text gives it time to read the order, check your policy and act, so resolution quality is higher.

The results are in the cases. At Otrium, 60% of 120,000 annual tickets are resolved end to end. At MR MARVIS, the agent handles over 120,000 questions a year and gives personal product advice 24/7. Engaige is built for e-commerce, not as a generic horizontal tool. To see it on your own tickets, book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

What is e-commerce live chat?

It is real-time messaging between a store and its shoppers, answered by people, a chatbot or an AI agent. A widget collects the message, an inbox routes it, and the answerer replies. What the answerer can see and do decides the quality of the answer.

Is live chat worth it for a small online store?

Usually, if someone can answer or the chat says honestly when someone will. A small team with mostly pre-sale questions can run chat by hand. Once order questions arrive at volume or out of hours, you need a bot or an AI agent behind the widget.

Should store chat land in a separate tool or my help desk?

In your help desk, once more than one person answers or chat is not your only channel. One queue keeps the customer’s history together and puts the order next to the conversation.

What is the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent in chat?

A chatbot follows scripts and hands over when a question falls outside them. An AI agent reads live data, follows your policies and can act in connected systems, with hand-offs to your team where your policies say so.

Which metrics show whether store chat is working?

Response time, resolution and hand-offs, read side by side. Count chats the bot or agent resolved apart from those it handed over, so a closed chat is not mistaken for a solved problem.

Is Engaige a live chat tool?

No. Engaige is an AI support agent that works inside the help desk or Crisp you already run. Your chat widget and help desk stay; Engaige reads the order, acts, replies and hands over the rest with context.

Can Engaige answer chat questions before purchase?

Yes. As an AI shopping assistant in a storefront chat widget, usually the help centre widget, it gives product advice from your catalogue. After purchase, the same agent answers order questions and takes actions within your policies.

How fast can Engaige go live on my store’s chat?

You go live in Agent Assist in hours, with Engaige drafting replies for your team. Ticket types then move to autonomous one at a time, autonomous in about a week, and Engaige AI keeps improving the agent with your approval.
