Best Intercom alternatives for e-commerce (2026)

The best Intercom alternatives for an online store in 2026: keep Intercom and replace Fin, or move to Gorgias, Zendesk or another help desk.

The best Intercom alternatives for an online store go two ways. Keep Intercom as your inbox and replace Fin with an e-commerce AI agent such as Engaige, or move to another help desk: Gorgias, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Richpanel, Help Scout, Front, HubSpot Service Hub or Kustomer. Decagon and Sierra are AI platforms for larger teams.

This guide is for a store’s support lead who runs Intercom (the company is now called Fin) or is weighing it. Facts come from the vendors’ own pages as of October 2026, and vendor figures are labelled vendor-stated. For what Fin is and how it works, start with our Fin guide.

Why do teams look for Intercom alternatives in 2026?

For a store the trigger is rarely the inbox. Intercom is built around SaaS-style support: account, product and onboarding questions. Store tickets are orders, returns, deliveries and subscriptions, and that is where teams start to look elsewhere.

The gap shows on store work. Intercom documents five Shopify templates for order info, catalogue and cart (11 September 2026), and none of them covers refunds, cancellations or address changes. Intercom’s Procedures article of 17 July 2026 says Fin connects to tools such as Shopify through data connectors or MCPs.

Intercom's help article on data connector templates, with the Shopify Storefront and Shopify template groups in the Data connectors panel and an on-page list of Search Catalog, Get Cart, Update Cart, Get Product Details and Get order info, captured 21 October 2026.

Our view in one line: Intercom is built for SaaS support; Engaige is built for the store.

Ownership is a roadmap point, not a reason on its own. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Fin, formerly Intercom, on 10 September 2026; the Salesforce deal page has the timeline.

So the split this guide follows is simple. You can keep Intercom and replace Fin, or move to another help desk.

What does Intercom still do well?

Intercom is a polished, widely adopted platform, and Fin is a capable agent. Credit is due before any comparison: the inbox and Messenger are mature, and Fin has several controls worth asking every alternative about.

Fin has Procedures in natural language with a Loop in teammate approval step, simulations and batch tests, Fin’s thoughts and Fin Operator diffs you approve.

Fin’s e-commerce page markets refunds, cancellations and address changes, and states a 76% average resolution rate across all customers (vendor-stated, undated). Whether that holds for your order tickets depends on which store actions are set up.

The top of Fin's e-commerce page at fin.ai/solutions/ecommerce, headed 'The best-performing AI Agent for ecommerce support' (vendor wording), with an example email in which Fin sends a prepaid return label for a wrong item, captured 21 October 2026.

How should you evaluate an Intercom alternative?

Five checks separate a real upgrade from a sideways move. The first decides whether you migrate at all, the next three test what the AI does with an order, and the last tests whether you can see and limit what it does. Ask each one in a demo, with your own tickets.

#CheckWhat to ask in a demo
1Keep or moveDoes it work inside Intercom, or need a migration of conversations, help articles and workflows?
2E-commerce actionsCan the AI itself refund, cancel, change an address or apply a discount, and are those actions shipped or built by your team?
3Live data from several systemsDoes one answer combine the order, the carrier event, the return and the subscription?
4How it learnsLearns from what, and who approves the change?
5Reasoning and controlCan you see why it acted, set per-step limits and thresholds, and test before launch?

What are the best Intercom alternatives?

The best Intercom alternatives for a store fall into two routes. Keep Intercom and replace Fin with Engaige, which resolves order work inside your inbox. Or move to another help desk: Gorgias, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Richpanel, Help Scout, Front, HubSpot Service Hub or Kustomer. Decagon and Sierra sit apart as AI platforms.

Keep Intercom, replace Fin: Engaige (that’s us)

Engaige isn’t a help desk: it’s the e-commerce-native AI support agent that works alongside Intercom, replaces Fin and keeps your inbox, and Engaige AI configures and improves it. At MR MARVIS, a Shopify Plus brand handling over 120,000 questions a year, Engaige resolves over 60% of the conversations it’s involved in.

Engaige's value proposition, 'Resolve up to 90% of your support tickets automatically', above the product's policy editor: asked in plain language to create a policy for damaged items, Engaige AI adds 'Damaged item, replacement in stock', which checks stock, creates a free reshipment and leaves a note for the warehouse, captured 12 October 2026 in the Engaige demo organisation.

The angle is one answer from the whole store. Intercom stays the inbox, so there is no migration of conversations, help articles or workflows. The agent reads the order, the carrier, the returns and the subscription in one answer, then takes the Shopify action itself and replies to the customer: refunds, cancellations, address changes and discounts. They are native actions you enable, rather than data connectors you build.

That answer comes from several live systems at once. On Shopify, Engaige combines live Admin API data, pricing across markets and SKUs, inventory, orders and customers, with the marketing content from your storefront. It runs on 50+ native integrations with vetted, plug-and-play actions, and it connects to any system.

Every answer shows its working: which systems Engaige checked and why it replied as it did. Example data.

For an answer built from four systems, you want to know what each one said. Engaige shows the full reasoning and the sources for every answer and action in its dashboard, and if a ticket goes to your team in Intercom, the agent adds a short summary of that reasoning as an internal note.

You go live in Agent Assist in hours. Brands that move quickly reach autonomy in about a week, and Engaige automates up to 90% of supported tickets. Autonomous from day one is also supported, and learning continues once autonomous.

In Agent Assist, every reply your team sends is compared with what the agent suggested; that is one of the signals Engaige AI learns from, alongside conversations, your inputs, hand-offs and trends. You approve every change.

You set the limits. You decide per step whether the agent acts on its own or drafts for your team, and you can set thresholds, such as sending refunds above a certain amount to a person first. Test every policy in the Playground before it goes live, including real past tickets you paste in. Engaige is text-first by design: email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social DMs, with no voice AI.

Otrium shows resolution at scale: Engaige resolves 60% of its 120,000 annual tickets end to end.

Move to another help desk

If the inbox itself is the problem, these are the common destinations. Each is one short paragraph, with the detail on the guide that owns it. Engaige works inside Intercom, so keeping it is the route that avoids a migration.

Gorgias is a Shopify help desk. Its AI Agent takes Shopify actions such as cancelling an unfulfilled order or editing the shipping address, and its Gaia drafts changes and, by default, waits for your approval. For the pair head to head, see the Gorgias comparison, and for the wider field, Gorgias alternatives.

Zendesk is a proven, horizontal help desk. It completed its acquisition of Forethought on 26 March 2026 and sells self-improving AI agents (vendor wording), and its AI agents can invoke custom actions and action flows. See Zendesk alternatives.

Freshdesk is Freshworks’ help desk. Its Freddy AI Agent takes real-time actions, and its vertical agents come with Shopify, Stripe, PayPal and FedEx integrations and workflows such as cancel order. See Freshdesk alternatives.

Richpanel is an e-commerce help desk whose AI actions run against Shopify, Recharge, Loop and Skio, each action with its own permission. Its QA AI groups misses by cause. See Richpanel alternatives.

Help Scout is a people-first inbox. Its AI agent, Scout, answers from help content, and Apps, which will connect Scout to payment processors and CRMs, were marked Coming Soon on 21 October 2026. See Help Scout alternatives.

Front is a collaborative inbox. Its Autopilot takes action in your systems with Playbooks written in plain language, and it supports External Agents. See Front alternatives.

HubSpot Service Hub is the CRM many teams already run. Its Breeze Customer Agent resolves common enquiries from your knowledge base, help docs and website. Its use-case page names no e-commerce actions (October 2026), so ask about Shopify actions in a demo.

Kustomer has a unified customer timeline. Its AI’s Shopify Search Orders tool only reads from Shopify (help article of 19 March 2026), and writes need custom tools.

AI platform: Decagon

Decagon is an AI platform for larger teams, not a help desk. Its Duet Autopilot proposes fixes, tests each one, and needs human approval before production; see Decagon. Sierra, the other AI platform, has a row in the table below.

How do the alternatives compare at a glance?

The table sorts the field by what matters after Intercom: which route it is, whether the AI takes e-commerce actions, and what it learns from. These are Intercom’s main competitors for a store. Where a cell says “see its guide”, the owning page has the detail and this page does not guess.

What does an Intercom alternative cost?

Compare the licence model plus the migration, measured as cost per resolved ticket rather than the sticker price. Model it at today’s volume and at twice today’s volume, for every candidate, Fin included.

Intercom’s pricing page lists Fin at $0.99 per outcome on top of help desk seats (vendor-stated, October 2026); the seat table is in the Fin guide linked in the introduction.

Intercom's pricing page, 'Intercom helpdesk plans with Fin AI Agent built in', showing Essential, Advanced and Expert helpdesk seats with Fin AI Agent at $0.99 per outcome on each plan, captured 21 October 2026.

Moving help desk has a cost of its own: rebuilding conversation history, help articles, workflows and macros, which belongs in your cost per resolved ticket. Keeping Intercom and replacing Fin avoids it. Engaige is a flat monthly fee tied to your ticket volume, predictable as you scale. Other vendors’ prices sit on their own guides.

Which Intercom alternative fits your store?

Match the alternative to what sent you looking. If you like the Intercom inbox but want the AI to resolve order tickets, keep Intercom and replace Fin. If the inbox is the constraint, pick the help desk that fits how your team works.

Frequently asked questions

Who are Intercom’s main competitors?

For a store they are Gorgias, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Richpanel, Help Scout, Front, HubSpot Service Hub and Kustomer as help desks, and Decagon and Sierra as AI platforms. Engaige works differently: you keep Intercom and it replaces Fin.

Can I keep Intercom and replace Fin?

Yes. Intercom stays your inbox, with its conversations, help articles and workflows, and Engaige takes over the AI work on store tickets. That is the keep-Intercom route in this guide, and the one that needs no migration.

What is the best Intercom alternative for a Shopify store?

It depends on the route. Keep Intercom and add Engaige for native Shopify actions from live Admin API data, or move to Gorgias or Richpanel if the inbox itself is the problem. Run the five checks above on each candidate.

Does Fin take actions on Shopify orders?

Fin’s e-commerce page markets refunds, cancellations and address changes. Intercom’s help centre lists five Shopify templates (order info, catalogue and cart), none of them for refunds, cancellations or address changes; Procedures connect to Shopify through data connectors or MCPs (October 2026).

Do I have to migrate to switch away from Intercom?

Only if you move help desk, which means conversations, help articles and workflows. Replacing only the AI keeps everything in Intercom.

How is Engaige priced?

Engaige is a flat monthly fee tied to your ticket volume, predictable as you scale.
